Fwd: CWC - Weekend Wrap Up

Hello CWC Parents!

I hope everyone remembered to turn their clocks forward.  Despite the loss of an hour we had several wrestlers in action this weekend.  The CWC coaches are so proud of the extra work our young wrestlers are putting in.  It will all pay off next winter!

Maddox Rogers (K-1 55 pounds) competed in the 2020 Virginia State Rookie Championship in Yorktown and dominated his opponents to claim a spot at the top of the podium.  Maddox outscored his opponents 35-9 on his way to his second 1st place finish this year.  Maddox also finished 1st at the Regional tournament.

Bronc Jesse (Bantam 65 pounds) competed in the 2020 MAWA District Tournament and battled to a 3rd place finish.  After suffering a last second pin in his first match of the day (he was leading in points) Bronc battled back and had to wrestle his 1st match opponent again and returned the favor with a quick pin to claim the 3rd place spot and earn a spot at the MAWA Regional Tournament in April in Salisbury, MD.

Finn Sheehan (3rd-5th 61-68 pounds) traveled to Roanoke to compete in the 3rd Annual Killer Miller Classic and came home with a 3rd place finish!  Finn scored an escape and a takedown with 7 seconds to go in the 3rd period to push the match in to overtime and then he solidified his 3rd place finish with a takedown in OT!  Great work Finn!!

Our loan State Champion, Owen Townsend, is preparing for a trip to Iowa where he will compete in the National tournament.  If you see him be sure to offer him up some encouragement as he prepares for his big day!

I saved the best for last.  My favorite part of this weekend was getting to coach our lady CWC wrestlers as they competed in the War of the Roses.  Quinn, Fiona, Isla and McKenna represented the CWC proudly as they battled through match after match.  Isla took home a 5th place medal,  Quinna and McKenna both finished with 3rd place medals and Fiona (an Orange Club native) dominated her bracket for a 1st place finish!!  So proud of these ladies and how they wrestled.  Can't wait to see them at this tournament next year!

Thank you everyone and we look forward to seeing you at practice tonight or at one of our next sessions.  Share what we're doing in C-ville with your friends and family.  It's not too late to join the CWC.  We're growing something special!!

Cavalier Wrestling Club - Spring Session - 1st practice

Hello CWC Spring Session Parents,

The CWC wrestlers and coaches just finished the VAWA State wrestling tournament and we can't be any more proud of our wrestlers.  One Champ, two 3rd place medals and a lot of valuable lessons learned.  One of the most important lessons is that success is built in the off-season.  What we do while our opponents are taking a break is key to future success on the mat.  The CWC winter session will officially be wrapped up after several of our young lady wrestlers compete in the War of the Roses on the 8th!  We are so excited to see our girls team growing!

Tomorrow, Monday March 2nd is our first practice of the spring session.  I have copied winter session parents on this e-mail just in case you are interested in getting registered for the spring session.  We will meet at Memorial Gym and practice will begin at 6:00 pm sharp so please get there a few minutes early.  We will wrap things up at 7:00 pm.  Coach Earl Hall will lead each practice and do his best to recognize what each wrestler needs to work on to improve his/her skills in the off-season.  This session is typically our smallest session which allows for some great individual time with Coach Earl.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Thank you!

Sunday's - Louisa - Central VA Regional Tournament

Hello CWC Parents,

Following will be information for our Central Virginia Regional Tournament hosted at Louisa High School this weekend.
  • Location
    • Louisa County High School
    • 757 Davis Hwy, Mineral, VA 23117
  • Time
    • Weigh -ins
      • EVERYONE must weigh in prior to the tournament at Louisa High School.  For those of you that have only participated in scrambles this is an added step.  Please arrive at Louisa High School between 7:00 - 8:00 am.  If your wrestler is not in line by 8:00 am he/she will not be allowed to wrestle.
    • Wrestling
      • The plan is to start wrestling by 9:00 am if not sooner.  For those new to wrestling it is a rare occasion for tournaments to start on time.  There are a lot of moving parts.  My guess is we start wrestling between 9:00 am - 9:30 am.
  • Singlets
    • Singlets are not required.  If you have one I would suggest wearing it though.  Wrestling shoes are needed and headgear is encouraged, but not required. If your wrestler has braces he/she will need a mouth guard.
  • Team Warm Ups
    • I will be there and try my best to get us a CWC corner to consolidate in.  As soon as possible, after weigh-ins, I will start warming the team up.  We will warm up for 20-30 minutes before clearing the mats for the start of the tournament.
  • Snacks
    • I will have some snacks for our wrestlers and a cooler with some drinks.  Any wrestler is free to help themselves to the snacks.  You and your wrestler are responsible for any dietary limitations/restrictions.
  • Registration
    • IMPORTANT - You MUST be pre-registered through Track Wrestling prior to arriving at the tournament. Here is the link https://www.trackwrestling.com/registration/TW_Register.jsp?tournamentGroupId=182043132  If you have any questions about how to register through Track wrestling please reach out asap.  I have attached my Track Wrestling "how to" document to this e-mail.  Once you have a Track Wrestling profile you will need to register for the "Central Region Youth Tournament".  Payment can be processed online through Track Wrestling.  I am a little concerned that not everyone who is planning on participating has completed registration yet.  Our team Google Spreadsheet (used for club purposes) shows over 20+ wrestlers planning on going.  When I looked at the list of CWC wrestlers registered through Track Wrestling we only have 16 wrestlers registered.  If you did not select CWC as your club team when you registered then it's possible you're not showing up in my search.  Once you have registered you should have received a confirmation e-mail from Track Wrestling.  Here is the list of wrestlers that have registered through Track Wrestling as a CWC member.

    • If you have any questions please give me a call.  (434) 960-3372.  I will be at the UVA - vs - UNC wrestling match tomorrow night as well from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm if you plan to be there you can grab me then.
  • Thank you!
    • I know this seems like a lot, but as you newer parents get acclimated to this process it will get easier...I promise.  I have a couple very busy days between now and Sunday, but please call with any questions or concerns.  This is going to be a great event for our club to attend and I can't tell you how happy the coaching staff is at the number of wrestlers we will have out this year.  I believe, if memory serves, we had 7-8 wrestlers last year.  We're looking at over 20 for this year.
Have a great weekend,

Central Virginia Regional Tournament

Hello CWC Parents,

This is just a quick reminder that this Sunday is the Central Virginia Regional Tournament at Louisa High School.  If you have any questions about it please let me know.  I believe the cutoff for pre registration is this Friday.  Online registrations are done through Track Wrestling.  Once you are registered please notate on the Google sheet that you are going so we coaches know who to expect.  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KhpBc6EKc95Yylj8Qt0JLu6smZk9NobkKZxqcL6JF3g/edit?usp=sharing

This should be a great tournament and a competitive way to end the season for most of our wrestlers.  For those that intend on competing at the State Tournament this will be a great warm up.

See you at practice!

CWC - Newsletter - 2-10-2020

Hello CWC Families,

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  The CWC had 12 wrestlers travel all the way to Hookie territory (ugly bird) and wrestle in the Blue Demon Brawl at Christiansburg High School.  The whole coaching staff was very proud of our boys efforts.  Finn, Nathan, Bronc, Mac, Turner, Russell, Jameson, Mason, Owen, Walter, Stephen and Lucas all benefited from competing at a very tough tournament.  Coach Earl said, "I am very proud of the way the boys competed yesterday.  This weekend was a great lesson for our boys and I hope they remember how tough it was".

We finished with four wrestlers making the podium.  Mac 2nd, Bronc 2nd, Jameson 3rd and Stephen 3rd.  This tournament was exactly the tune up we needed/wanted as we head into the Central VA Regional Tournament at the end of the month and the VAWA State Tournament.  Coach Earl says, "All review and conditioning this week" so make sure your wrestler is at practice and ready to work hard.

For most of our wrestlers, the last opportunity to compete this season will be on Sunday February 23rd at Louisa High School.  Here is the info I received from the Tournament Director.

Louisa is hosting the 2nd Annual Central Region Youth Tournament on Feb 23rd. Weigh-ins are from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM in a singlet (or shorts and a t-shirt.  Can't weigh-in in just underwear). Anyone not in line at 8 AM will NOT wrestle. Pre-registration is required. Headgear is not required, but encouraged. The cost is $10. Here is the link https://www.trackwrestling.com/registration/TW_Register.jsp?tournamentGroupId=182043132
This tournament is by invitation only currently. We are attempting to have a "post-season" feel for the kids and have a region followed by VAWA states the following week. Currently we have Louisa, Orange, CWC, and Greene along with the Richmond Metro League and some teams from the Valley. However, we are continually looking to expand and have invited more teams than last year.

We should be wrestling no later than 9:00 am but hopefully sooner. Concessions will be available (including breakfast).
There will be a $2 spectator fee for non-USA coaches to help cover the costs of refs and medals. We will once again have VHSL certified officials.

If you have any questions please just let me know.

Thank you,
Dan Bono
Louisa Wrestling Club

This is a tournament that will require a Track Wrestling profile and for each wrestler to pre-register through Track Wrestling.  My "How-to" guide is attached.  Once you have decided if you are attending or not please update out CWC Team Google document.  Link to that document is here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KhpBc6EKc95Yylj8Qt0JLu6smZk9NobkKZxqcL6JF3g/edit?usp=sharing.  When you register, be sure to select the Cavalier Wrestling Club as your club.  When coaches login to Track wrestling the day of the tournament we will be able to see the schedules matches for all wrestlers in our club.

I hope to get a large group of CWC wrestlers out to this.  It looks like we already have 16 wrestlers planning on going!  Even for beginner wrestlers this will be a great lesson in what a real tournament is like.  It will be a step up from a scramble.  As usual, I'll get there early and try to setup in a corner of the gym so parents and supporters can sit together.  I'll bring some snacks and drinks for the wrestlers.

The following weekend the VAWA State Tournament will be held at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, VA.  This tournament is broken up into two days (Saturday/Sunday) by age.  This is by no means a scientific filter, but if your wrestler places at the Central VA Regional Tournament I would encourage they try to make the state tournament.  If you think your wrestler may be interested in competing, but you're not sure reach out to a coach at practice and we can offer our honest opinion on whether it would be a positive learning experience for your wrestler.

If you have any questions please reach out.

CWC - Memorial Gym Access

Hello CWC parents,

I received an email from our friends at the Memorial Gym Facilities crew and they are asking that I reiterate that we do not contractually have access to any space other than the wrestling room during our practice time.  See e-mail below.  I would appreciate your help keeping siblings that are present during practice to stay near the wrestling room.  I apologize for any inconvenience this causes you as I know the room can become a bit hot and stuffy.  We have to be careful with adhering to the Mem Gym rules so we appreciate your help in this matter.

Rory,

Lately we have seen who we believe to be CWC family members up on the basketball courts during CWC practice times. Please send a reminder that the Basketball courts and other facility spaces (weight room, cardio room, combative room) are for individuals with IM-Rec memberships and UVA students during this time. If the CWC would like to discuss providing access to the basketball courts during practices please reach out so we can discuss access and potential membership/rental fees.

Thanks!

Thank you!

CWC - Loaded Weekend

Happy Hump Day CWC Families,

  Just a couple reminders.
  • It's not too late to grab tickets for the UVA vs Tech match Friday night. If you are going, plan to come out early and be apart of Coach Earl's clinic.  If you have any questions about how to get tickets let me know.
  • Casino Night is this Saturday!  We have a great group of CWC parents who have already purchased tickets, but we're looking for more!  Come on out and support the CWC and have fun playing casino games that don't hurt as much when you lose it all.  Thank you to parents that have donated gifts, trips and other prizes for the silent auction.  We have hard to find bottles of bourbon, guided fly fishing trips and rumor has it a private lesson with Coach Garland will be up for bidding!  Let me know if you have any questions and we hope to see you Saturday night!
  • Blue Demon Brawl - On Saturday February 8th I am taking Russell and Turner to this tournament in Christiansburg.  I still have 2-3 spots open in my car if there are any wrestlers interested in going that need a ride.  You will have to register on Track Wrestling for this tournament so let me know if you need help figuring that out.  If your wrestler is going and you are driving him/her let me know so I have an idea of how many CWC kids will be there.
I hope everyone has a great rest of the week and that we either see you at the match Friday or the Casino night Saturday.  Thanks!!

CWC - Weekend Wrestling

Hello CWC Parents,

Our kids have been wrestling hard this week and they are going to have plenty of opportunity to put their skills to the test this weekend.  First, I wanted to clarify that we are having practice on Martin Luther King Day.  I know schools are closed that day, but we are holding practice and will work some of the energy out of the kids!  If you ever have a question about the practice schedule I have a printed copy of the entire seasons schedule on the wrestling room door and it is available on a tab at the bottom of the shared Google Document.  Link here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KhpBc6EKc95Yylj8Qt0JLu6smZk9NobkKZxqcL6JF3g/edit?usp=sharing.

For those wrestlers that are coming out for the UVA Prematch Showcase please plan on arriving between 8:30 am - 9:00 am.  We will get a quick warm up in and start wrestling at 9:30 am.  I have put together matches with the Culpeper Cobras and Midlothian Miners so that everyone of our wrestlers gets two matches.  Due to the large turnout of our CWC wrestlers I did have to match up a couple of our wrestlers against teammates.  We simply didn't have the numbers from the visiting clubs to accommodate our large turnout.  This will still be a great event and the kids will get to wrestle on the same mat that the UVA guys will use later that morning...so a very cool experience for them.  Please encourage your wrestler to take their match seriously even if they are matched up with a teammate.  It will still be a great learning experience in a unique environment.  Our plan is to finish wrestling by 11:30 am with a hard stop time of 11:45 am so that the UVA and VMI teams can get ready.  The CWC will have Papa Johns Pizza (Cheese and Pepperoni) and drinks for all the wrestlers to enjoy while we wait for the college match to start at 1:00 pm.  Wear your wrestling shoes, singlets and headgear if you have them, but if you are still ok with shorts and a t-shirt.  Headgear is not required for this event.  At this point, we have no intention of canceling the event for weather.  They are calling for mostly rain and possibly a wintry mix throughout the day.  Our visiting clubs have committed to coming and I think we may just luck out with the weather conditions.  Please reach out with any questions.

Wrestlers that are going to the Greene County Scramble please plan on getting there between 1:30 and 2:00 pm Sunday.  I am excited at out turnout at this point!  We have 21 wrestlers signed up to go and it's not too late for others that still want in.  Please update the Google Document or e-mail me and I'll update for you.  In addition to Greene and Louisa the Culpeper Warriors are planning on bringing 10-15 wrestlers so some of our wrestlers may get to see some new faces!

Thank you for all your support.  Wrestling parents deserve a special place in Heaven...not everyone understands what it is like to sit in a smelly gym for hours to cheer on your wrestler for just a couple minutes, but when they get their hand raised and look over at you with that smile (Cooper) you know it's worth it!!

Let me know if you have any questions,

CWC Parents,

What a weekend!!  I can't express how proud I am of our wrestler's!  Here's a quick breakdown of our clubs action and then a few notes as we head into the next week.

Lynchburg Central VA Open
Walter and Russell traveled down to Lynchburg, VA to compete in the Central VA Open on Saturday.  Russell had three great matches with several winnable moments, but didn't come out on top.  He's anxious to get back on the mat and wrestle a complete match.  Walter wrestled in two weight divisions and had eight matches on the day.  He won all eight and took home the gold in both brackets!  The Lynchburg tournaments offer some great competition that many of our wrestler's would benefit from.  I hope to get us out for a tournament in the future.

Virginia Duals
Jameson and Mac traveled to the Hampton Coliseum to compete in the Virginia Duals.  This tournament has a great reputation for being a very tough tournament.  The UVA College team was also there competing this weekend in the College Division.  Coach Jimmy shared that both boy wrestled extremely well and came away with 2nd place finishes.  A huge accomplishment!  This could also be a great tournament that the CWC sends some more advanced wrestlers to in the future.

Louisa Scramble
We had just over 20 wrestlers attend the Louisa Scramble today!!  I was so pleased with the turnout and even more pleased with our wrestlers performance.  In my humble opinion the CWC wrestlers proved to be the most dominate club in the gym overall.  I could go on for several paragraphs about the hard fought battles and great performances I witnessed and heard about throughout the day.  Most importantly, everyone had several matches and it looked like every wrestler walked out of the gym with a smile on their face.  Thank you to all the coaches that helped coach at the various competitions we had going on this weekend.

UVA Prematch Showcase
Our next competition is this Saturday, January 18th in the upstairs of Memorial Gym.  Our plan is to meet upstairs of Mem Gym at 8:30 am.  The Culpeper Cobras and Midlothian Miners will arrive at 9:00 am and we are hoping to start wrestling at 9:30 am.  We should have 2-3 matches going at a time and we will have some UVA wrestlers helping us out as referees.  Please notate on the Google Spreadsheet whether you plan to attend or not by Wednesday at the latest.  I need to communicate our roster to the teams traveling here to wrestle us so they bring wrestlers that match up with the weights we will have in attendance.  I am trying to organize matches prior to the event which will be different than what you are used to at the scrambles.  It should help us keep matches going smoothly and make the most of our time.  At the conclusion of our matches (everyone should get two) we will be providing drinks and pizza for all our wrestlers in attendance.  The goal is to eat pizza between 11:55 am - 12:15 pm then watch the UVA Varsity team take on the VMI Keydets at 1:00 pm!  Headgear is not required, singlets are not required (but wear them if you have them) and wrestling shoes are not required (but wear them if you have them).  Anyone looking for a free pair of used shoes ask about the purple bin at the next practice.  We have a plastic bin of used and donated shoes.  If they fit and don't smell too bad they're yours!!

Greene County Scramble
Following the UVA Prematch we will be participating in our last scramble of the season at Greene County on Sunday, January 19th at 2:00 pm.  Let's plan to be there by 1:30 to warm up.  Wrestling should start at 2:00 pm.  Many of our wrestlers will compete against kids they have already wrestled, but this is still a great opportunity to get mat time, practice our basics and have a lot of fun!  Please notate on the Google spreadsheet whether you plan to attend or not.  Shorts and t-shirts are ok (singlets are not required), wrestling shoes if you have them, headgear is not required.  I'll have snacks and drinks for the wrestlers.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Hope to see you there.

Central VA Regional Tournament - Louisa
We have one last match on the schedule for this session.  The Central VA Regional Tournament is used as a warm up tournament for the Virginia State tournament for many youth.  I would encourage all of our wrestlers to consider being a part of this tournament.  It would be a great experience and offer a higher level of competition than they have seen at the scrambles this year.  Whether you plan to wrestle at the state tournament or make this your last competition of the season it's a great event to see how you've grown and see what you need to work on moving forward. This tournament is held at the Louisa high school and there is a $10 fee that will be collected the day of the event in cash.  There will be more to come on this as I receive information from the tournament director.  If you're interested mark the date on your calendar.

UVA vs VA Tech Match

Tickets on Sale NOW for January Dual vs Virginia Tech

This season we'll welcome in-state rival Virginia Tech to battle in one of the nicest venues the country has to offer, the John Paul Jones Arena! Though a beautiful arena, we want the environment unforgiving towards the Hokies. To do that, it is going to take all hands on deck to reach our goal of 5,000 in attendance on January 31! If Iowa and Penn State can bring 20,000 for a dual, we sure as hell can find 5,000 heinies to fill seats. That said, we need all of your help! Put a big red circle around Friday, January 31 and invite everyone you know for a fun night of high-level wrestling.
The attendance goal is part of our staff's larger vision to have the highest average dual meet attendance in the ACC Conference. Some think we are crazy, and that may be true (for other reasons), but we want to build something special here in Charlottesville and with the help of Cavalier Nation we can get it done.

Something UVA Wrestling fans should get excited about is, for the first time ever, we'll be offering mat side seats!  To reserve your Matside seats now, click on the link below!
Matside tickets will be sold at $50 per seat and benefits include premium seats, chalk talk and snacks with the coaching staff before the dual, a signed UVA Wrestling Poster, and a $25 credit for our annual CWC fundraising event "Casino Night" the following night.
THESE MATSIDE SEATS HAVE BEEN RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC! Our marketing team will start blasting out the advertisements next week so if you still want matside seats, get them today before the Hokies do!

CWC Casino Night

Fwd: CWC - Newsletter

Hello Parents,

Another CWC newsletter is coming your way!

  Greene County Scramble

Thank you to all those that were able to make it out for the Greene County Scramble last Sunday; the feedback was great!  These scrambles are the best atmosphere for our new and beginner wrestlers to get valuable mat experience while maintaining a competitive, but educational environment.

I can't tell you how proud I was of our wrestlers!  They did great.  Hands were raised in victory and tears were shed in defeat, but every match proved to be a great experience.  I can't wait to get them back on the mat again soon.

  Louisa County Scramble

The Louisa County Scramble is quickly approaching and I would like to begin to nail down our roster for that by midweek if possible.  Please access the Google Sheet and put your intentions on attending.  Here is the link for anyone that still needs it https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KhpBc6EKc95Yylj8Qt0JLu6smZk9NobkKZxqcL6JF3g/edit?usp=sharing.  If you would just like to e-mail me if you plan to make it or not I will gladly update the sheet for you.

My plan is similar to last Sunday.  Let's plan on getting to Louisa as close to 1:30 pm as possible so we can get setup in a corner and get our kids warmed up.  It will be a similar format as the Greene event, but we will have some new wrestlers (the Culpeper Cobras) so our wrestlers will have the opportunity to face some new, strong, wrestlers.  I will have a table and cooler with some drinks and snacks for the team (and anyone cheering them on).  Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll get you an answer.

  UVA – vs – VMI Pre-match

The pre-match is still set for Saturday, January 18th at 9:00 am in Memorial Gym.  Please continue to either let me know or mark your intentions on making it to the pre-match.  I am working with several out of town teams and need to provide rosters to them so they can match our wrestlers up with what they have.  We don't want them bringing out a kid that we can't get a fair match with and I don't want to have a CWC wrestler come out that I can't provide a match for.  So please check your calendars and see if you can make this event work.

As soon as we are done wrestling I will have drinks and pizza for all wrestlers to enjoy.  Plan to stick around, if you can, to watch Coach Scott deal with his inter-turmoil while the Hoo's make light work of VMI!  Let me know if you have any questions about this event.

  Coach Steve Garland

For those that attend the Monday/Wednesday practices be sure to get there a few minutes early tomorrow.  Coach Garland will be at the beginning of our practice to say a few words to the club.  The CWC plays a big part in the Regional Training Center (RTC) and ultimately helps grow the level of competition for UVA wrestling.  We wouldn't have Coach Earl without it!

  Casino Night

Parents, you owe it to yourselves to take a little break and have some fun. If you can have fun and support the CWC is it even a question of whether or not to attend?  Here is the link for the annual Casino Night http://www.cavalierwrestlingclub.org/camps/casino_night_2020/_e7G . My wife and I have gone the last couple years and it is always a good time.  Food starts at 5:30 pm with fun casino games to follow.  There is also a silent auction with some great gifts.  We hope to see you there!

Sign in – USA Wrestling Cards – CWC Waivers

Please continue to sign in on the clipboard hanging on the wrestling room door.  Also, there is a list of anyone who does not have a CWC waiver on file or a USA wrestling card.  I will have a stack of waivers by the door.  I just need a signature and your wrestlers name written on the top of the page.  If you need help with the USA wrestling card let me know.

As always, thank you for your time, attention and your wrestlers!

P.S. I will be following up with my promised e-mail explaining Track Wrestling as soon as possible.

Thank you and have a great day!
