CWC on the Podium at VAWA State Tournament

Congrats to the wrestlers and coaches of CWC! This weekend several wrestlers hit the mat at the VAWA State Tournament. Everyone wrestled hard and showed a lot of heart! We had several wrestlers that made it onto the podium and placed in the top 6 in the STATE! Representing CWC. Jameson took 3rd, Mac took 2nd, Owen took 5th. Walter was 1 match away from placing after winning 4 in a row! Great job!
I want to also thank you all for a great Winter Session!

Important UPDATE on PEE-WEE PRACTICE!

This morning the forecast was that the temperature would rise and rain would follow. My hope was that the temp/rain would help clear the roads. That has not happened. Several parents have been out around town and reported the roads are in bad shape. A contact with a parent who works with emergency services requested that we keep the parents off the road this evening.
With that advice, We have decided to CANCEL PEE-WEE PRACTICE for this evening.  I am very sorry for the short notice, I really wanted to have the practice.

So, to make it clear, NO PEE-WEE or ADVANCE practice this evening 2/20 at Gracie Charlottesville.

Thursday night PRACTICE CANCELED

I am sorry to inform you that Thursday evening CWC practice in Memorial Gym has been canceled. Due to a conflict in scheduling, the Pitt wrestling team will need to be in the room during our usual practice time. For those who would still like to get a practice in before the State Tournament, Covenant (175 Hickory Street, Charlottesville) has opened their facility for a practice to CWC Wrestlers on Friday from  3:45-5:30! This will be the location for the satellite weigh-ins for the VAWA State Tournament.  If for some reason you cannot make that practice, you are welcome to join the PEE-WEE practice at Gracie Charlottesville on Wednesday at 5:30. Sorry about the inconvenience, hopefully you can make one or both of the extra practices.

AGE DIVISION CHANGES THIS YEAR

Over the past several years, the VAWA Kids States were using outdated age groups. It was not identified until right before the 2018 Kids Folkstyle Championships. We do not know how this was missed, but the board agreed that we must do what we can to get back on track for the 2019 Kids Folkstyle States. This error in the past even had kids turning a year older than the specified age group. In an effort to bring the Kids States closer to the suggested USAW age groups, VAWA made a modification that would best fit the needs of the state from last year to this year. All in all, the age groups span 2 years. The typical physical/mental growth and development of wrestlers will be  similar to all. We understand that the change may not be something everyone agrees with, but a change was needed. It is our hope and intention, to align the VAWA States Folkstyle age group divisions along with the stated USAW age divisions in the future.  The State will hold its annual board meeting in September and we welcome our clubs and coaches to attend. If you can not attend, we welcome your suggestions via email submitted during the first week of September. The date and site will be announced this summer.

Message about next weekend from Dan Bono

I hope everyone had a great final weekend of wrestling. 3 really important points that parents and other coaches should know:

1. Registration deadline is 8:00 PM Friday 2/15. There will be NO same day registration. This is to get the tournament started as close to on time as any wrestling tournament can be.

2. Wrestlers MUST have a valid and current USA card to participate. The local $15 card is fine. We will have computers available to purchase cards but it would be much better to have that done already.

3. Check in closes at 9:00 and anyone not checked in will start being removed. If something happens please have them call you or me (540) 894-6406 and let us know.

Here is the link again

The $5 fee is payable online and we would prefer it be done that way, but we will accept cash or checks at the door.

Thank you,
Dan Bono

Saturday Event Info for Memorial Gym

A couple notes about the CWC Wrestling Event before the UVA/Duke match (tomorrow, Saturday Feb 9):
1. We have permission for all of the kids to use the main locker rooms downstairs. Please have the kids change in those areas. Remember to keep all of your valuables with you.
2. Please do not let wrestlers hangout or warm up in the back halls or stairwells.
3. CWC will be providing PIZZA at the end of the wrestling event. It should arrive around 11:30! Please bring your own drinks.
Have a great weekend!

Message from Dan Bono for those wrestling Sunday

We will be at Orange this Sunday 2/10/19. This will be our official weigh-in for 2/17. If a wrestler is not weighed on 2/10 they will be weighed at Louisa 2/17 at check-in. There will be rosters already printed out to record weights.
Weigh-ins begin at 12:15. We will start wrestling by 1:00 hopefully. We will match up mat side like we did last week.

There have been reports of spitting, a bite, and a slam. In my opinion a bite means the kid is sitting for the rest of the day. Biting has no place in our sport and carries a suspension in high school.
Slams and spitting can be a more case by case basis (not all slams are flagrant, and a wrestler could be spitting out a hair or something). Almost all the matches are recorded and I think we can have a quick huddle and decide if a rest of day DQ is warranted, not as a punishment but for the safety of the other wrestlers until a coach can review proper mat decorum during practice that week.  Again, these are only my opinions. Please feel free to weigh in. We will have VHSL certified officials for the tournament on the 17th.

Thank you guys for a terrific year so far,
Dan Bono
