Thursday Dec 20

Many members of the club (mostly middle school) will be competing at Covenant School on Thursday Dec 20. The details were sent out over the Team Manager app. For those of you who are not heading over to Covenant on Thursday, we will still hold practice at Memorial Gym at 6:00. Sorry for the confusion.

Winter Break Schedule

CWC Parents,
Last week I sent out an email informing you that CWC will not have practice on Dec 24 and Dec 31. I took it for granted that the Memorial Gym would be open over the break. I was informed last night that is not the case. Mem. Gym will be closed from Dec. 19th through Jan 2. The management at Memorial Gym has been so kind as to allow us to have practice tomorrow evening 6-7 but they will not have any staff on duty after that until early Jan.
To clarify things, no practice Dec 24, 27, 31, and Jan 2nd for the ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLERS. Pee-wees will not have practice Dec 26th. I hope this has not caused any inconvenience for family time planning.
On another note, starting tomorrow Emmet Street will be closed! The street will remain closed until early January. Please plan accordingly, the traffic may be a mess. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. Thanks again for your understanding.

Wrestling Opportunities

CWC Parents,

We wanted to share a quick note regarding opportunities for your children to compete.  A parent volunteer (Andy McGinty) has worked hard to put coordinate these opportunities so many thanks to him.

To be clear, NONE OF THESE ARE REQUIRED, however competing is an important part of improving so we want to present these opportunities.  For those of you new to wrestling we have classified the competition schedule into three separate categories.

1.       Duals:  These are competition opportunities where our club will compete against other local clubs.  The CWC will have coaches at these and we will pair matches according to age/weight/ability to the best of our power.

a.       These opportunities are listed here CWC Winter 2018 Schedule.

b.      We will also ask you fill out this sheet with: whether or not they will attend, their weight, age, experience, level.

c.       The week before the match we will send out more details (arrival time, confirmation of age groups, instructions, etc.)

d.      The schedule is still not finalized, so there will likely be more opportunities added.

e.      Note, not all opportunities are for all ages/levels.

2.       Tournaments with CWC Coaches:

a.       There are open tournaments that we will announce (on the schedule sheet above and/or on GameChanger) that CWC will have 1 or more coaches at.

b.      You will have to register/pay for these separately through the registration process listed on the tournament announcement.  We will provide the links for these when we announce them.

3.       Tournaments WITHOUT CWC Coaches:

a.       You are always free go to open tournaments to compete.

b.      Here is a list of VAWA Tournaments and here as well Trackwrestling Tournament Page (on this one just "search events" for Virginia.

c.       For the folks new to wrestling there are often "Rookie" tournaments for kids with <2 years of experience.

It has been a great year so far!!

Important CWC Message

CWC Parents,

Thank you all for your patience as we have adjust to our new practice location in Mem Gym.  While things are different and there are challenges, please remember that the ability for kids to practice in the UVa Wrestling room is a very unique privilege that we can easily lose if we do not respect the rules and the facility staff.

1.       We need to enter via the front entrance.  It is OK to exit through the "back-door" proximate to the wrestling room.

2.       There is ABSOLUTELY NO HORSEPLAY in the hallways/common areas before practice.

3.       There is no problem arriving early for practice, but if you do so parents needs to be with their children and ensuring there is no horseplay.

4.       Parents that are dropping their kids off.  Please do not send your child into the building before 545pm.  We will ensure that there is a coach there by 545pm.  This is because we cannot have children in the facility unsupervised.

5.       If we ever need to wait for the UVa team to complete practice.  Please ensure that we in no way disturb them and that you keep the small hallway by the wrestling room entrance clear.

6.       It is imperative that we are respectful of the facility staff.  If we are not the entire club will suffer and the kids will lose out on what is a really cool opportunity to practice in a DI wrestling room.

Thank you again for your patience and please contact me if you have any questions.

CWC Communication

It was brought to my attention that several people did not receive the notice that practice was canceled on Monday. First off, I would like to apologize to anyone who did not receive the notice and traveled to Memorial Gym, we are still working out the kinks in our new communication app. Second, I have a few requests that will greatly improve the effectiveness of the communication chain.
Everyone who is registered in the Cavalier Wrestling Club winter session should have received an email with a request for you to join the Cavalier Wrestling Club Team Manager App. Please click on the link and follow the steps to join the group. At this time only about 2/3 of the registered participants have accepted the request.
If you do not wish to participate in the group communications, please be sure to check the Cavalier Wrestling Club Website (News link) to catch the current closings and team/club activities. here is the link  http://www.cavalierwrestlingclub.org/_news
Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our communication system.

Thursday 12/6 time change for practice

CWC Members,
Due to scheduling issues with the UVA Wrestling room we will have to change the start and end time for the 12/6 practice at Memorial Gym. We will start practice at 5:30 and end at 6:30.  This will only be on Thursday 12/6.
I'm sorry if this is an inconvenience for families but our only other option was to cancel the practice. I am sending out this email to parents but please reach out to others you may know that may not read their emails regularly. Thanks

Cavalier Wrestling Club Expectations

CWC members and Parents,

Thank you for your continued patience as we adjust to our new facility. The management at Memorial Gym has prepared a small list of expectations for CWC to follow. I believe we have already implemented most of the Mem Gym Management requests but please take notice of the change in the entry for CWC members. We will now enter through the main entrance (not through the alley as they requested last week). Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your help in meeting the expectations.

Cavalier Wrestling Club Expectations

·         The Cavalier Wrestling Club is an Athletic Department sponsored program that is to be contained within the UVA Wrestling Practice Room to avoid interruption to IM-REC Sports and Kinesiology operations.

·         The Wrestling Observation Deck must remain locked and void of CWC athletes and family members at all times.  Waiting family members should also avoid sitting on the stairwells or hallways that may impede egress.

·         CWC participant and family members do not have access to Memorial Gymnasium recreational spaces including Fitness Rooms, Combative Room, Gymnasium, Multi-Purpose Room and Track.

·         The existing Memorial Gymnasium hallway benches may be use for the waiting CWC family members along with the Lower Level Conference Room once that space if completed.

·         For consistency with other Athletic Programs; all participants should enter through the front doors of Memorial Gymnasium for access and to be greeted by facility staff.

Memorial Gym Practices

Thank you all for a great first week of practice! For those of you who are attending CWC elementary and middle school practices at Memorial Gym please use the side door off of the alley near the parking garage. There should be a coach at the door or you may use the buzzer to gain entry. Also, the upstairs level of the wrestling room will not be open to spectators. We were told the fire code will not allow large numbers of people around the upper level platform.
Sorry about the confusion. You are welcome to sit against the wall in the wrestling room and in the hall near the stairs. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. See you this week!

CWC Update

CWC Parents,

A couple of notes:

-          The Pee-Wee practice on Tuesday 20 Feb 2018 will be run as an inter-squad “match” (same location and same time as always).  We think that the kids will really enjoy this and it will be a low-stress opportunity for the kids to get the feel for what a competition is like.  The kids may want to wear their singlets if they have one and would like to wear them.

o   The Advanced Practice on Tuesday will continue as normal.

-          A reminder that the CWC will be hosting a K-8 tournament on Sat 24 Feb (K-5th at 9am; 6-8th at 11am).  Please indicate HERE if you plan to attend.  See the prior message from Chris Wiles for further details.

-          There will be two changes in leadership for the CWC

o   I will be stepping down as the CWC President and Travis Paulson will be taking over this position.

o   Tommy Mello will be stepping down as the Scholastic Program Director and Rick Palmer will be taking over as the SPD.

§  Note that Rick is planning to be at practice on Tuesday night so I will be happy to introduce him to you all.

-          For those interested in having your child stay on the mat in the Spring we will be offering a Spring Session.  Details and registration are located HERE.

Announcing Charlottesville Regional K-8 Invitational Tournament Sat. 2/24

I am excited to announce that CWC is hosting a tournament this year for grades K-8 (pre-K may wrestle in the K-1 age group) on Sat. Feb. 24.  We will be holding it on 3 mats in the auxiliary gym and wrestling room at CHS (our normal dual meet location) and will be staggering the start times K-5 at 9am, 6-8 at 11am.  We will group kids by age, weight, and experience with the goal of creating 5-6 man round robin brackets, and will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals.
Pre-registration is necessary by marking your intent on the normal spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UZil6HZm3H8Fg-FWRi25Spx4OHt-ca3kSibTP4-L7wc/edit?usp=sharing
We will be measuring weights at practice on Tue. (peewee) and Thurs. (all others) next week.

Please let me know any questions, and any offers for volunteer help are greatly appreciated (the proceeds will benefit our club).

Casino Night and Sunday Youth Match Before UVA-VT

CWC Parents,

A couple of notes:

-          Our annual “Casino Night” fundraiser will take place this Saturday, 10 Feb 2018 at the English Inn at 530pm (see attached flier).  This event is the primary fundraiser for the CWC Olympic Regional Training Center and the CWC Scholastic Program (that is you guys!!!).  This fundraiser helps enable your kids to be coached by former All-Americans (like Eddie Klimara who runs every Monday practice).  Let’s have a good showing of CWC Scholastic Program parents at the event this year.

o   Register for the event  HERE.

-          We will be hosting a Dual Match on Sunday at Memorial Gym (warms-ups at 830am; wrestling starts at 9am)

o   The match is before the UVa-VT Dual meet so we have a tight time window, thus will be setting match pairings beforehand.  In order to participate you must sign up here by 5pm on Thursday evening.

o   The CWC will be treating the wrestlers to pizza after the youth match (1130am), so…

-          Please stick around Memorial Gym after the youth match to watch UVa take on VT on Sunday.  The match will start at 1pm.

See you all this weekend.

Re: Amherst Tournament

Parents I will be there to coach the younger kids.  I will arrive a little early for weigh-ins and be there until the u10's are finished.  My cell number is 240-305-7870.  We have been to this tournament before and it should be a good one for newer wrestlers.  Most brackets are round robin which usually guarantees at least 3 matches per wrestler.  I will be on the mat for warm-ups by 8:30.

Fwd: Greene County k-5th grade wrestling on Sunday

CWC Wrestling Parents of PeeWee's and Elementary School athletes:

This is what we know from the folks in Greene County for Sunday's event:

Wrestling in the gym at William Monroe High School begins at 2:30 on Sunday.  Warm ups will start at 2:00.

This is only for grades K-5th grade. There will be no middle school matches.

We will be running 4 matches at a time.

Most wrestlers will get 3 or 4 matches and we should be done between 5:00 and 5:30.

Concessions will be available.

It will be informal, but still a very useful and fun day of competition.

-David Wilkerson

Free clinic for any and all ages before upcoming UNC Home Dual, This Friday night 4:45pm--5:45pm at Memorial Gymnasium UVA Grounds

Dear friends of wrestling,

My staff and I have decided to help put on a free clinic (technical based instruction only) for any and all age groups prior to our big home dual this Friday night against UNC-Chapel Hill. This dual meet will feature some of the best wrestlers in the nation on both sides of the mat. It should be a heck of a lot of fun and we thought we could add a bit of community service to all those who are available. We would love to have your child come and learn and be a part of this clinic. Here are the details:

Date: Friday, January 19th
Time: 4:45pm—5;45pm
What: Technique only clinic (no live wrestling)
Cost: It is free and open to any and all ages. Bring everyone!
What to bring: Essentially, you just need t-shirt and shorts and hopefully wrestling shoes..:). Nothing special needed.
Who: Headlining our clinic will be Head Coach Steve Garland and NCAA All American Eddie Klimara
**We will be providing some pop and pizza to the kids after the clinic free of charge.

Again, I really hope you can make it out and please do spread the word.
