Cavalier Wrestling Club Update

Dear CWC Parents,
I hope you all had a great weekend. Here a few reminders as the holiday draws nearer.

Winter break may be about to start, but we plan to continue holding practices on a reduced schedule over the holidays.
  • This Week: This is the last full week of practice before the New Year.
    • Elementary/Middle School practices scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week.
    • Pee Wee practice is scheduled for Tuesday this week.
  • Next Week (Dec 20 - 26):
    • Elementary/Middle School - Due to a UVA men's basketball game next Tuesday and Christmas Eve next Thursday, next week's Elementary/Middle School practices will only be held on Monday, December 21, at 6 pm.
    • Pee Wee - Next week's Pee Wee practices are contingent upon whether we can get into Charlottesville High School. We'll have more information on this in the coming days.
  • Week of Dec 27 - Jan 2:
    • Elementary/Middle School practices are currently planned for Monday, December 28 (Basics), and Tuesday, December 29 (Advanced). There will be no practice on Thursday, December 31, because it is New Year's Eve.
    • Pee Wee practices are tentatively schedule for Tuesday, December 29, but we may combine with one of the practices at UVA on Monday or Tuesday if we can't get into Charlottesville High School over the holidays. Again, more information to come.

Finally, a large contingent of our middle school wrestlers got some great competition experience this past weekend wrestling at tournaments held at Charlottesville High School and Wilson Memorial High School. A huge thank you to the parents who made it possible for your children to compete this weekend. All reports were that your sons acquitted themselves and the CWC very well on both Saturday and Sunday. Please take a moment to read Coach Kammauff's recap below.

Happy Holidays!

Greetings CWC families,

We had a great weekend of wrestling for our Middle Schoolers.

On Saturday, CWC hosted the City/County Wrestling Championships.

  • Max Timmins wrestled a couple of exhibitions and won both of them.
  • Braden Blackorby blew right through his bracket with 2 pins.
  • In the 80lb class we got to see another epic match between Brian Gittens and Andrew Wiles.  Andrew won 3-1 for his first win against Brian.
  • Joey Burch finished in 2nd place against in a 6 man bracket.  Joey lost a 2-1 decision to Mike Morales of Cov.
  • Jack McMullan finished in 3 rd with a big pin vs. Morales
  • Aiden Valentine had 2 come from behind wins.
  • Keegan and Kyler Cress wrestled in their first middle school matches battled more experience wrestlers very tough.
  • David Wiles ran into some really tough wrestlers to start the tourney but bounce back to win his last match.
  • Jago Gould has become a man of the summer and has bumped his wrestling up a level.  He only lost one match to a varsity wrestler from Covenant.
  • TJ Brooks continues to improve by beating a couple of his McIntire LL buddies in Xander Smith and James Tanner.  For Xander and James, this was their first competition and they showed how far they have come.  Both of these kids are very coachable and are soaking in what we are teaching.
  • John Yates showed how tough he is going to be by wrestling and beating some older kids.
  • Andrew Edwards and Graham Chandler showed much improvement and their day is coming.
  • Ben Yates ran through his competition to win the tourney.  He is also becoming a good leader on the team and looking to help whenever he can.

On Sunday, we had 9 MS wrestlers compete and I believe most medaled according to Coach Wiles. Some of the highlights included:

  • Jago Gould winning the tournament.
  • Brian Gittens recovered from Sat and beat Andrew Wiles in another battle.  It is good to see these two battle each other even though they are teammates as they are make each other better (steel sharpens steel).
  • David Wiles also recovered from tough day on Saturday to finish in 2nd place.
  • Joey Burch also medaled.

Please forgive me if I left anybody out.  I also need to thank all the parents and adults that stepped up and made this weekend successful.

Best regards,

John
